Avoid These 6 Myths about Weight Loss

Written by clare on November 23, 2008 – 9:25 pm -

Perhaps you’ve considered going on a weight loss diet at various times in your life. But maybe you hesitated because you thought it was too complicated or too hard. Judging by all the information about dieting that’s out there, there are a lot of myths making the rounds. Our goal here is to disprove several of them.

1. The most popular of dieting myths is that the best way to lose weight is by cutting out as much food and calories as you can. This is an extremely unhealthy way to go about dieting. Your body thinks it’s starving and will cling to its fat stores tenaciously.

2. Another myth we face in our quest for a slimmer waistline is one that tells us to eat only one specific type of food. The peppered water, grapefruit and the hot dog diet fads have resulted in many binges over the years. An unbalanced fad diet will result in not enough nutrients that are essential for good health and a strong immune system.

3. Maybe you think that it’s an irreversible error to slip up on your diet. And if you do, you must pay the price by doubling up on your workouts. This is simply untrue. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional bowl of ice cream. You only need to adjust your calorie intake for the day. You don’t have to work out for ages in order to make up for a small indulgence.

4. A popular myth is that you should avoid eating before bedtime because your body will just store all the calories as fat. This one isn’t true because a diet only means that you’re eating healthy and watching your caloric intake for the day. If you have a small snack before bedtime, it won’t have any real impact. But not if you’re indulging in a full meal or a vat of cookie dough ice cream.

5. How about the one that says you can’t eat anything between meals? Snacks are actually part of a healthy eating style. Eat smaller meals throughout the day to keep your hunger satisfied. By eliminating snacks between meals, you’re only going to make yourself hungrier at meal times. You might end up eating considerably more food than your body requires just to keep hunger at bay.

6. One more myth warns against consuming dairy products, for the reason that they’re highly fattening. But there are many essential nutrients contained in dairy products, so it’s unwise to completely cut them from your eating plan. Indeed, there is research indicating that regular consumption of dairy products can lead to dropped pounds. However, watch how much you consume and opt for low fat selections.

Avoid being conned by all the myths about weight loss that abound on various websites. Nutritious, mindful eating along with regular exercise can be the combination that will help you with your healthy weight loss.
